Recruiting for a New Exercise Cohort!

Calling all stroke survivors with aphasia!

We are excited to announce that we are now recruiting participants for our next APEX exercise program, starting in January 2027!

The goal of this study is to better understand how physical exercise may help improve language, thinking, and movement in people with aphasia after a stroke.

The study includes assessments before and after the exercise program, as well as group exercise classes held three times per week for 12 weeks (February 22 – May 14, 2027). The first two weeks of classes will take place in person in San Francisco, followed by 10 weeks of classes from home over Zoom.

Participants will receive $600 for completing the study!

For more information about the study, please visit our Current Study page.

If you are interested in learning what exercise can do for you, please reach out to our team or use the contact information in the flyer below. We look forward to hearing from you!

APEX Team at the Academy of Aphasia!

The APEX research team, including Dr. Maria Ivanova, Research Coordinator Meera Devine, and Student Researchers Aria Sanghvi, Ryan Luftman, and Sherise Chan from UC Berkeley, presented their research at the 64th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Aphasia in Liège, Belgium, this October!

The team was excited to share preliminary findings from our ongoing research on exercise, cognition, language, and mental health in individuals with aphasia. Our posters highlighted different aspects of aphasia recovery and the importance of understanding the many factors that contribute to life after stroke.

“Cognitive Contributions to Syntactic Comprehension in Aphasia: Evidence for a Structure-Specific Pattern”

– Presented by Aria Sanghvi

“Working up a Sweat and a Smile: Preliminary Effects of Physical Exercise on Mental Health in Individuals with Aphasia”

-Presented by Ryan Luftman

“Cognitive and Language Contributions to Verbal Fluency Performance in Post-Stroke Aphasia”

– Presented by Sherise Chan

“Toward Computerized Cognitive Assessment in Aphasia: Initial Application of the California Cognitive Assessment Battery (CCAB)”

– Presented by Meera Devine

A special THANK YOU to our research participants and the APEX community for making this work possible!
